911 calls on Las Vegas freeway reveal accounts of other drivers after crash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The first bystander to the scene of a crashed vehicle on a Las Vegas freeway said he initially thought the driver was suffering from a medical episode, but then saw the gunshot wound.

8 News Now obtained new 911 calls from bystanders, drivers and even the family of the man who was killed after the fatal shooting on Aug. 8 in the southbound lanes of I-15 near Flamingo and Spring Mountain roads.

Darin Algee, 31, was shot while driving with his wife and four-year-old son, causing him to crash in the center median of the highway. A bystander was among the first on the scene with 911 dispatchers on the line.

The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 as Darin Algee, 30, was driving his gray 2017 Audi Q5 SUV in the fast lane of I-15, according to Las Vegas Metro detectives . “He’s bleeding from the mouth, looks like he’s having a seizure,” a 911 caller said.

Lasha Bowie responded to the viewer saying her husband had been shot.

“He’s been shot,” the caller said. “Bleeding profusely from the mouth and back.”

In the background, Bowie and her four-year-old can be heard screaming as the 911 dispatcher directs the bystander to add pressure to Algee’s wound with a shirt.

“Please, please,” Bowie said. “Prick him out.”

The bystander told the 911 dispatcher that he did not see the other vehicle involved in the crash and said he only pulled over after seeing Algee’s vehicle in the center median.

Another caller told 911 dispatchers they may have video of the crash, a driver from his trucking company witnessed the crash and possibly filmed it on a dash cam.

“The driver thought he saw that particular incident,” the caller said. “I pulled that video up front, there’s a long shot of when that car actually hits the median, I’m not sure your investigators could find anything of value in it.”

Las Vegas police also received a call from the victim’s mother, who said she wanted to contact authorities because of Bowie’s lack of communication following the shooting.

Algee’s widow, Lasha Bowie, declined to provide further details about the shooting, citing concerns about interfering with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s investigation, and instead wanted to focus on their family’s loss.
