One dead, one in critical after an early morning shooting in Normal

UPDATE: (10:15 am) — An Illinois State University graduate student said in the aftermath of a deadly shooting near their apartment building that it’s “the first time he didn’t feel safe.”

Matt Blalock said he’s been on campus for five years and the shooting made him uneasy. Both he and another student, Zach Clark, a senior, said it appears things started around midnight with “hordes of people.”

The police arrived and tried to break up the crowd, but the group resisted and did not disperse. At some point, the shooting started.

NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — A person was killed and another remains hospitalized after a shooting early Sunday in Normal, police said.

The shooting happened near the Illinois State University campus at about 3:42 am, police said.

Officers were called to the 300 block of North Main to break up a large party. While there, they heard gunshots and went to the 300 block of North University Street, which is not far away, and found two victims, said Brad Park of the Normal Police Department.

Park added, “Our investigation into this incident is currently active and further information will be released.”

WMBD has a reporter at the scene who said there are multiple placards on the ground. At least six police cars are on scene with officers speaking with tenants of the nearby apartment complexes. Evidence is being tallied.

Also parking lots of buildings on the ISU campus are blocked off, it appears.

Chief Steve Petrilli said the shooting could turn out to be Normal’s third homicide of the year. The chief said he did not believe the victims were ISU students but more information would be coming out later in the day.

This weekend was homecoming weekend for the university. It was not immediately clear if that was a factor that led up to the shooting.
