I just watched A Quiet Place: Day One for the first time and I appreciate how the main character is a cancer patient

Post-apocalyptic movies and TV shows usually the main hero is a tough and strong male lead, whether it’s Kevin Costner water world, Chris Evans in Snowor Arnold Schwarzenegger in finished series of films. But what if the main character was an ordinary woman who was already fighting a health battle? This hero exists in A quiet place: the first day, that played by the talented Lupita Nyong’o. After watching it for the first time, I think we all have to appreciate the apocalyptic horror movie because its main character is a cancer patient.

It’s refreshing to see a cancer patient as a hero in a post-apocalyptic world

In movies where the main character has cancer, a common tendency is for the disease to define them as in The fault in our stars, Earl and I and the dying girland 50/50. In Sam’s case from A quiet place: the first day, she is a main character who happens to have terminal cancer. However, she doesn’t use her cancer as an excuse to give up on the aliens so easily. At least not before she gets her favorite pizza.
