There are tons of other word games online now, but I still play the New York Times Wordle game every day. These days, it’s not just an old friend, it’s also a nice warm-up for Connections, Strands and the rest.

We’ve also ranked all the letters in the alphabet by popularity if you want to use this list to decide the best starting words for you.

Daily Wordle Tips

I’ve written a lot about Wordle — from coverage of the 1,000th word to my list of the best starting words to a helpful two-step strategy to news about controversial word changes. I even put together what I learned from playing the successful online word puzzle game for a whole year. If you’re rethinking your need for a real answer, you might try advice from one of those stories.

Need another opening word? One person told me that they just look around and pick a five-letter object they noticed to use as a starting word — like COUCH or CHAIR. I tend to stick to initial words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I’ve read people use the financial term WHEELS, but I like to use words I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether or not the letters you guessed are in the puzzle and if they’re in the same place you guessed they are. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle created the game for his partner and let her narrow the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language down to just 2,500, creating the database of answers. . It was convenient, too, to have a name that plays on “the word.”

A Times spokesperson told me the first Wordle appeared on June 19, 2021, and the paper celebrated the game’s 1,000th word on March 15. Spoiler: That 1,000th word was EXPLODED. As in “Daddy will erupt if the Wordle is so rough he loses his streak.”
