Governor Cox declares a state of emergency due to recent flooding

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Cox has issued an executive order for a state of emergency in response to the recent and future risk of flooding across the state. The executive order will remain in place for 30 days unless extended.

The declaration would allow Utah to request and receive assistance from other states through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, as well as protect property and people affected by flood damage.

“The flooding we’ve seen in recent weeks has been devastating,” said Governor Cox. “I’ve seen some of the damage in Sanpete County, and I know Utahns have been similarly affected across the state.”

Nearly half of the homes in Fountain Green City were damaged after Sunday’s flooding, with several homes receiving several feet of water in their basements.

Last week in Saratoga Springs, several homes flooded after heavy rains, with many homes still recovering from a sewer backup.

In Governor Cox’s release, recent wildfire scars and high temperatures have increased the risk of structural damage from flooding and debris flows.

The executive order takes effect immediately and will remain in effect for 30 days, unless the Legislature extends the state of emergency.
