Ave Roundtable: Gainesville’s Best Bars

Ave Roundtable: Gainesville’s Best Bars

Whether you’re in the mood for a low-key lounge, a dive with character, or a place to dance the night away, Gainesville’s bar scene has something for everyone.

To help you navigate, the summer staff at The Avenue has compiled a list of our favorite places to grab a drink. From hidden gems to popular game day getaways, these are the places that keep us coming back, time and time again.

Baby J’s

Carlos Alemany

Baby J’s Jazz Cocktail Bar – located at 7 W. University Ave. – is a cornerstone of downtown Gainesville nightlife. The bar offers an immersive experience with live jazz performances from local artists and a menu of drinks and desserts. Whether you’re there for the music, the atmosphere, or a well-crafted drink, Baby J’s offers an intimate setting that showcases the best of Gainesville’s vibrant music scene.

Baby J’s greets customers with a warm and welcoming atmosphere as warm lighting casts a soft silhouette on the stylish upstairs tables and jazz stage.

A $5-$10 entry fee is typically expected to support the bar’s musicians, a small price to pay for the authentic jazz experience that defines Baby J’s. The venue also hosts weekly themed karaoke and DJ nights featuring artists such as DJ Lil Auby. Guests often get to meet local Gainesville jazz talent who enjoy mingling with guests after their shows.

Baby J’s menu is just as impressive. With delicious martinis, chicken sandwiches and desserts, guests are treated to elegance at a reasonable price.

Baby J’s Espresso Martini Affogato — an indulgent espresso martini topped with vanilla ice cream and hot espresso — is an absolute must. The food menu also offers delicious options from crispy yuca fries to tender baby burger sliders that are perfect for sharing during happy hour from 5-7pm.

The establishment remains an ever-evolving gem for jazz lovers and a go-to spot for anyone looking for a soulful and relaxing night out.

If you’re looking for a local EDM venue, Vivid Music Hall – located at 201 W. University Ave. – it’s the right place.

Formerly known as Knockin’ Boots, the club has transformed into a diverse venue with something to offer the public. Although he continues to put down his line dancing nights, the spot has featured big-name DJs including Dombresky and Slander.

The venue’s visual output is unmatched, highlighted by its recent 4th of July 360 set with SNBRN. Vivid Music Hall is also known for its regular Pop Punk and Emo nights. The range of options and unmatched vibes stand out among the downtown selections.

Salty Dog Salon

Sabrina Castro

Everyone needs something to aspire to, and for many UF students, that’s the Salty Dog Saloon, located at 1712 W. University Ave.

The Salty Dog Saloon is one of the few bars in Gainesville that has a strict 21 policy. The lounge’s jukebox song requests offer something different from typical house music, with retro Indies like “Linger” by The Cranberries and “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne.

On an average Wednesday night, Salty Dog looks like a scene from a 90s movie. Circles of college graduates crowd the wooden booths, laughing and singing while ordering pitchers of beer and playing card games.
