Assam assault accused drowns in pond after fleeing custody | Nation

PTC News Desk: A main accused in a minor girl’s r@pe case died after trying to flee police custody this morning, according to the police. Around 4 am, the accused, Tafujal Islam, was taken to the area of ​​the alleged incident for a re-creation of the crime scene. He then fled from police custody by jumping into a pond in Dhing, Assam’s Nagaon district.

A search operation started and his body was found after about two hours with the help of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), according to authorities.

“Following his interrogation, he was brought for crime scene re-creation. When he was taken there, he tried to run by pulling the handcuff from a constable’s grip. He then fell into a nearby pond,” a senior police source stated.

Our constable was also injured, he said. “We are investigating as to how he was able to flee,” said the officer.

Tafujal Islam was reportedly going to take the police to another accused’s home, according to police sources.

He was arrested on Friday following the alleged r@pe of a 14-year-old girl by three people in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday evening. Two other suspects in the case are on the run.

The alleged assault occurred while the girl was returning from a coaching class.

Local people reported that she was found semi-conscious by a pond, with her bicycle beside her. She had been on the road for around an hour when residents rescued her.
