A secret BTS about Mentalist and Red John I just found out while streaming

Do you know what a good time is? Revisiting old episodes from Mentalist. The long-running CBS trial starring Simon Baker has been streaming on Hulu since March (and is also available with a Maximum subscriptionamong others.) Since some of the the best streaming services i have the show right now, decided to get back into it and was not disappointed. But as I was doing that, I just learned a BTS secret about Patrick Jane and Red John that I didn’t realize when the show originally aired.

Yes, Simon Baker actually played Red John for most of the show

As the main antagonist, we hear from Red John countless times before the big conclusion at the end of the show, and Simon Baker told the State Journal Register that he actually voiced Red John until creator Bruno Heller realized how the final showdown will take place. .

All those times I heard Red John’s voice? That was me. Yes! In the season 2 finale when Jane was captured and Red John did that “Tyger, Tyger” thing with the mask on? That was me. I played both characters in that scene.

There was a fan theory when the series first aired that Patrick Jane might actually be Red John, and Simon Baker was well aware of this fact, noting that it was the “reason” both he and Heller felt that it’s a great idea to pepper this little easter egg repetitively.

That was why I did it. There was a moment when Bruno said, “We don’t know who we’re going to cast (the masked Red John). I said, “Don’t throw anyone away! i will do it Bruno said: “I love it! I love it!” So I put on a mask and did that funny little voice. And for the seasons after, whenever Red John spoke, I had to go record the voice.

Honestly, I watched with a Hulu subscription and I never would have guessed that.

Why Patrick Jane’s final scene with Red John played out the way it did

For most MentalistThroughout its seven seasons, Patrick Jane is haunted by the death of his wife and child at the hands of a perverted serial killer named Red John. He feels partly responsible for inciting the killer during a TV appearance and paying dearly. Ultimately, the Red John story ends with Patrick Jane committing an act of violence, and the script had originally written the scene very differently. It almost came out publicly as well.

It just had to be the two of them. It was almost like a love scene, as perverted as that sounds. The end of Red John was originally planned to take place at night in the street with people watching, but I pushed myself to do it in a quiet and beautiful place where they could be alone. There is no more intimate human act—not even sex—than killing another human being with your bare hands and watching them die. It’s really subversive for a network series. The risk is huge.

Baker didn’t hold back when he talked about the “risk” of filming a TV hero going through a revenge murder on network TV. It was a notable TV moment at the time, with people feeling very differently about what happened. Some thought the subversiveness worked, others thought it didn’t, and as he himself noted in the interview, “Some just want it over with.”

However, apparently if things had gone as written in the original script, we would have had a very different final showdown between Jane and Red John. It would have been more public, but perhaps less emotional than what we got in the end. Ultimately, though, a creator has to do what’s right for the character, and the specifics only became clear once he started filming. Here’s how Baker described it…

I don’t think even he thought he had the stomach for it, but there was so much momentum that he had to go all the way and choke the guy. It was a hard thing for Jane to do, but there was also a strange kind of liberation in it. I didn’t know how the scene was going to go until I shot it. It was really full.

Ultimately, Red John’s story was an integral part of the process from the beginning, and frankly, it’s a little surprising that the show went on a distinct hiatus after it ended on network TV. The “Red John” storyline ended midway through Season 6. Episodes in the series up to that point all had versions of “red” or red iconography in the title, but after the episode in question, the show’s titles each featured a different color, going between ” purple’, ‘silver’, ‘orange’, ‘green’ and many other colors of the rainbow.

The show only lasted a season and a half after Patrick and Red John’s messy relationship ended, but going into those episodes, Simon Baker took a step back from acting after that. (Though Baker’s return year may only be 2024.)

Regardless, I think it’s a good thing for the public to see Mentalist struggling with the consequences and moving on to new lives, new teams, and even a new gig at the FBI. All in all, it’s a show full of character, and if you haven’t given it a watch in a while, now is a great time, especially now that you know you’ve got Baker’s voice to try and catch.
