Riviera Beach’s police chief is no longer acting city manager

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Riviera Beach is holding a special board meeting Friday night after the city manager was suspended Wednesday for what the mayor called “neglect of duty”.

The meeting started at 17:30 at the Riviera Beach Marina Event Center.

According to a letter (read below) released by the city Thursday, the focus of the meeting will be “interim City Manager Michael Coleman’s agreement.”

Coleman, the city’s police chief, took over as interim city manager after Jonathan Evans was suspended Thursday.

However, Councilwoman KaShamba Miller-Anderson said Coleman resigned as interim city manager on Friday and will now remain police chief.

According to the city attorney, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Coleman could serve as interim city administrator but would have to resign as police chief to do so. Coleman decided he wanted to stay on as chief.

It is not clear who will now fill the interim position.

City Council President Douglas Lawson told WPTV reporter Dave Bohman Thursday that government services will not suffer from the changes.

The City Manager position has an annual salary of over $200,000.

Evans’ suspension runs until October 3. He did not comment on the situation.
