NFL Friday Night: Mac Jones, Carter Bradley throw touchdown passes

Quarterbacks Mac Jones and Carter Bradley threw touchdown passes in NFL preseason games Friday night. The touchdown pass for the Jacksonville Jaguars was nothing new for Jones as a three-year starter in the NFL. But for Bradley, the TD pass for the Las Vegas Raiders was the undrafted rookie’s first as a professional.

A former Alabama All-American, Jones followed Jaguars starter Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville’s preseason finale and produced two touchdowns and a field goal during his five drives in a win with 31-0 over the Atlanta Falcons.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said Wednesday that Bradley will start Friday night’s game. Instead, Nathan Peterman played the first half, the former South Alabama QB handled the second for the Raiders in a 24-24 tie with the San Francisco 49ers.

A third quarterback from an in-state school could have played Friday night, but the Miami Dolphins kept former Alabama All-American Tua Tagovailoa on the sidelines during a 24-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game included the first sack in a Tampa Bay uniform for rookie Chris Braswell, a second-round draft pick out of Alabama.

Jones completed 13 of 18 passes for 113 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and had an 8-yard run. Jones threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Elijah Cooks as the Jaguars took a 21-0 lead with 18 seconds left in the first half.

Traded to Jacksonville after three seasons as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback, Jones completed 38 of 52 passes for 421 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Jaguars’ three preseason games while was preparing for reserve service in 2024.

Bradley threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyreik McAlliser as Las Vegas took a 21-17 lead with 11:30 left in the third quarter.

Bradley had a chance to put the Raiders back in front after Las Vegas drove to the San Francisco 3-yard line. But his former South Alabama teammate, 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., came up with the first interception of his pro career on a fourth-down throw into the end zone with 11:18 left to keep the San Francisco up 24-21.

Bradley completed 9 of 21 passes for 169 yards with a touchdown and an interception and had one rush for 1 yard.

On the Raiders’ final possession, Bradley had four completions in a five-pass span to move Las Vegas 69 yards, and former Auburn standout Daniel Carlson hit a 43-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to tie the match. (NFL preseason games do not use overtime.)

Luter also tied for the team lead with five tackles and broke up two more passes.

Carlson kicked three more points for the Raiders.
