‘Irani Gang’ member posing as policeman for extortion, scam has taken place-Telangana Today

The Task Force (Central) on Thursday held Jaffar Ali alias Lambu (36), a member of the infamous interstate ‘Irani Gang’ from Karnataka. The team also seized cash worth Rs 95,000, a fake police identity card and other materials from him.

Hyderabad: The Task Force (Central) on Thursday arrested a member of the infamous ‘Irani Gang’ from Karnataka involved in cheating and extorting people posing as policemen.

The arrested person has been identified as Jaffar Ali alias Lambu (36), a marble trader from Irani Galli in Bidar, Karnataka.

Police said Jaffar Ali, posing as a police officer, targeted people carrying cash and distracted them on the pretext of checking for fake currency and fled with the money.

“He and his associates live in Irani Galli in Bidar. He mainly operates in the business areas of the city, targeting people who appear to be carrying cash,” said a senior police official.

His modus operandi involves approaching victims under the guise of being a police officer. He presents a fake police ID card and informs the victim that he is conducting a routine check for suspicious material. He then demands to inspect the cash in their possession, claiming that he needs to verify that the currency is genuine.

“During the process, he discreetly steals some of the cash while distracting the victim and returns the remaining cash before fleeing the scene. We analyzed CCTV footage from various locations and identified him as an Iranian gang member and traced five victims,” the official said.

Acting on a tip-off, the Task Force laid a trap for Jaffar Ali at Begum Bazaar and with the help of the local police nabbed him.
