Chelsea sign goalkeeper Jorgensen from Villarreal

Chelsea have announced the signing of goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.

The 22-year-old has agreed a seven-year deal, becoming the Blues’ seventh summer arrival.

“This move is a dream come true. I am very pleased to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Jorgensen told the club’s official website.

“I’ve always loved watching Chelsea because I watched Petr Cech growing up, so Chelsea were one of my favorite teams to follow.”

Who is Filip Jorgensen?

Jorgensen joined Villarreal’s youth set-up in 2017 and progressed through the ranks before being promoted to the first team last season. He made 36 appearances in LaLiga, keeping six clean sheets.

Born in Sweden, he represented his country of birth at Under-16 and Under-17 level before switching allegiance to Denmark, his father’s country, and playing for their Under-21 side.

What kind of player is he?

Jorgensen is seen to suit Enzo Maresca’s style of play as he is very comfortable with the ball at his feet. He is also a strong shot stopper, leading LaLiga in saves last season with 143.

How will he fit in at Chelsea?

Jorgensen is likely to compete with Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic for the No. 1 spot at Stamford Bridge. The latter made several appearances for Chelsea last season after Sanchez suffered an injury in December.

Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom are the other goalkeepers, while Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future at the club is uncertain, having spent last season on loan at Real Madrid.

Chelsea transfer activity 2024/25

Jorgensen joins Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Veiga and Caleb Wiley as summer recruits, while Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech and Malang Sarr are major exits.

When will Jorgensen debut?

He will join Chelsea on tour in the United States, where the Blues’ next game is against Club America on August 1 in Atlanta. Chelsea open their Premier League season at home to Manchester City on August 18.
