I bet $20 to marry my high school sweetheart – winning feels like a ‘rom-com’

I bet to marry my high school sweetheart – winning feels like a ‘rom-com’

This guy loves betting – and he just won big.

Newlywed Cade Wessel is now a little richer thanks to a bet he placed in his high school yearbook six years ago.

“Twenty dollars marry Sarah Dill,” the then-Class of 2018 senior from Bradenton, Fla., captioned his graduation photo, confident that one day he’ll tie the knot with his new girlfriend of just two weeks .

And luckily for the risk-taking romantic, the odds were in his favor.

Wessel and Dill, both 24, tied the knot on April 27, six years after his big bet.

“I was the happiest man in the world that day,” the recent groom, a construction worker, told Kennedy News.

After exchanging vows with Dill, an aspiring wildlife biologist, Wessel dropped a clear Andrew Jackson mug bill as they walked down the aisle hand in hand as husband and wife. The viral footage of his wedding day victory garnered over 18.6 million views on Instagram.

“We got perfect shots,” Wessel said, “and we won $20.”

Rolling the dice before saying “I do” makes the big day more exciting.

Pennsylvania bride Jennifer Hanks, 31, lost a Super Bowl bet to husband Patrick, 28, before the wedding. But rather than cash in, the groom was given the go-ahead to wear Philadelphia Eagles gear as they exchanged vows.

“A bet is a bet,” Patrick, who proudly rocked a Carson Wentz jersey at the altar, cheekily told The Post.

NYC darlings Nova and Reemo Styles, however, asked 60 friends and family members to each blindly risk $333 for a ticket to their unconventional wedding in June 2023.

The pair told The Post that after encouraging paying attendees to “trust the process,” their guests were treated to a chauffeured landmark tour around the Big Apple along with a lavish lobster dinner and steak at One World Trade Center.

Thanks to their cash-saving hack, Styles saved $70,000.

Money, however, was the last thing on Wessel’s mind as he prepared to marry his high school sweetheart – who he proposed to with an emerald-cut diamond ring during a sunrise hike in Hawaii.

“At my bachelor party I talked about my senior quote,” Wessel told Kennedy. “A friend said, ‘I’ll give you $20 when you walk down the aisle afterwards.’

“I forgot about that with all the planning.”

But the recollection of this serious statement quickly rushed back to fear.

“The teacher just threw this stuff at us at the last minute,” Wessel recalled of having to write a meaningful message under his Lakewood Ranch High School yearbook picture.

“I didn’t have anything profound to say like some of my friends were trying to do,” he added. “I was just thinking about Sarah and I knew I was going to marry her and I thought, ‘This is going to be cool down the road.’

“I didn’t say anything to him,” Wessel said. “I wanted to see if they would print it.”

At the time, the teenagers, who met in 2011 as classmates in the sixth-grade “Datacat” program, had only been dating for a short time. Dill just transferred to another school.

But the couple’s mutual friends eagerly alerted her to Wessel’s bold move.

“I was disappointed,” said Dill, who was immediately inundated with SnapChat photos of Wessel’s $20 bet after the yearbook was published. “He was pretty confident from the start.”

“Looking at that picture was a very fulfilling moment for us,” added the newlywed, who is currently enjoying a two-year honeymoon through Asia and Australia with Wessel.

“The wedding was one of the best days of my life,” she said. “To finally have the wedding with all our friends and family there, and the bet has been fulfilled.

“It just feels like a romantic committee.”
