He’s not your conventional coach – Andy Flower on Gautam Gambhir’s coaching flair

RCB head coach Andy Flower has found a handful of impressive traits in current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. The pair worked together in the IPL, both being part of the Lucknow Super Giants in the first two seasons.

After watching India clinch their first T20I series under Gambhir with a spare game, Flower tagged the former World Cup-winning Indian vice-captain as someone who can inspire the team a lot.

As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, Flower said: “He certainly has some of the characteristics of a successful coach. He didn’t really train, did he? He is not your conventional coach. It would probably be better to describe him as an inspirational leader than a coach. It could be more accurate.”

Andy added: “He’s a guy who has the conviction and courage of his own convictions and principles that will make other people really want to follow him. Followers or teams like to trust that their leader has the courage of his convictions. And GG certainly has that. He has strong opinions. He knows where he wants to go. He is willing to make tough decisions. He will have a very clear idea of the type of cricket he wants his teams to play.”

The Zimbabwean legend also highlighted the biggest demarcation between coaching a franchise and a country, stating: “The biggest difference between the two jobs (franchise and international cricket) is that in the international arena, you develop a team and develop. individuals with a medium and long-term perspective. Franchise cricket is more about short-term results and getting a bunch of disparate individuals going in one direction and believing in something in a very short period of time.”

He concluded: “Whereas in international cricket, you have more time for individual development and to develop a deeper group culture. (Gambhir) will play three formats, so they might be a little bit different. They might have different captains, for example, different senior players, but the tenets and tenets of the culture and unity you develop across three formats will be similar.
