Turning tragedy into support for local families

Turning tragedy into support for local families

Every day, hundreds of cars cross this Cameron Scroggins Memorial Bridge in the Chattanooga Valley.

However, many do not know who Cameron was and the impact he left behind.

Cameron was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2012.

Cameron never wanted to be the reason why I? He was always God’s purpose for what we do with the things we do, and whether he was here on earth or in heaven, God was going to heal him, said Trina Robinson, Cameron’s mother.

Trina Robinson describes her son as an amazing young man who couldn’t bear to see anyone left behind.

Cameron was also an incredible athlete who played baseball and football until his diagnosis.

When I told him, Cameron, you had cancer, he said, ‘Okay, what do I have to do to get back on the court in August,'” Trina said.

Trina said that when Cameron was in treatment, he was focused on cheering up the other kids there, whether it was painting his nails or baking cookies.

I was so proud of the young man he was and I was just so inspired by him because what he was able to do inspired so many others to do it for him, Trina said.

On December 7, 2013, at just 16 years old, Cameron died.

He said, so if I go to heaven, I have fulfilled my purpose, he said, and I agree with that. He said, because I’m going to a better place and I’m not going to get sick, Trina said.

Now his family is paying back as Cameron did, with the nonprofit Cameron’s Cause.

If someone calls and says, Hey, I have a struggling family. You know, can you help us? We are doing everything we can to help families in the Chattanooga area, Trina said.

Family and volunteers raise funds and take toys to TC Thompson Children’s Hospital and St. Jude’s. The nonprofit also donates funds to local high school athletic departments.

Cameron’s legacy will live on forever through his nonprofit organization and now through his memorial bridge.
