The Danish Heist thriller premieres at TIFF

The Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery Sidebar is the festival’s launch pad for emerging filmmakers, and just a few of its stable of alumni include the likes of Alfonso Cuarón, Yorgos Lanthimos, Christopher Nolan, Barry Jenkins, Maren Ade and Emma Seligman.

A filmmaker to watch this year is Danish director Frederik Louis Hviid with “The Quiet Ones,” a true-story thriller that debuts in the Discovery section, alongside films like Durga Chew-Bose’s “Bonjour Tristesse” with Chloë Sevigny . “The Quiet Ones” is inspired by a true crime that took place in 2008 amid Europe’s financial crisis, and IndieWire is sharing the film’s exclusive trailer below.

TIFF’s programming notes on “The Quiet Ones” compare Hviid’s first solo directorial feature to crime thrillers from Jules Dassin, William Friedkin and Michael Mann. “Working with a larger canvas and benefiting from Anders Frithiof August’s well-written screenplay – inspired by a real-life 2008 murder that netted more than $10 million and lengthy prison terms for 14 men – Hviid focuses the action on Kasper ( Gustav Giese), a charismatic. boxer who is reluctant to admit his true talents is outside the ring. As he plans the job alongside an enigmatic hardcase played by Reda Kateb, Kasper displays a demanding professionalism that could have carried him far in a more legitimate line of work,” writes TIFF.

Here’s the official synopsis: “As the financial crisis hits Europe in 2008, a group of Danish and European men plan to pull off the biggest heist ever on Danish soil. “The Quiet Ones” is a suspenseful action drama that depicts a group of extremely tenacious, ambitious and uncompromising robbers who share the same ambition: to succeed in the impossible – despite major obstacles, internal conflicts, agendas secrets and personal costs. It is the story of the biggest and most spectacular coup in Danish history and the long, detailed and risky preparation required to create a shortcut to greatness and riches. At any cost. Inspired by true events.”
