Who was voted off the mountain?

Sixteen players begin the adventure of a lifetime, but by the end of the first episode, only 14 remain. What happened in the premiere episode of CBS’ newest reality competition?

In CBS’ new reality competition series, a group of strangers must work together to scale a mountain in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. But only a select few will actually make it to “The Summit”.

During their journey, the contestants carry $1 million in prize money, distributed equally among them in their backpacks as they reach several checkpoints. In the camps they have to vote for each other. Along the way they have to overcome obstacles and have to make difficult decisions presented by what is called “The Mountain Watch”.

If the entire group of remaining contestants fails to reach the top of Cape Mountain within 14 days, they all go home empty-handed.

At the start of Sunday’s premiere episode, 16 players begin the adventure of a lifetime, but by the end only 14 of them are left. Here’s what happened. (If you don’t like spoilers, this is not the story for you.)

What happened in the premiere of “The Summit”?

Unrest among the group ensues fairly quickly as some players move slower than others and personalities clash. However, they are forced to work together during the first challenge, which was to stride across a rope bridge in pairs.

Beckylee Rawls, a 29-year-old construction worker from San Diego, is chosen to lead the team through the obstacle course. After settling on Arizona Army veteran Rose Mattie as her partner, she must decide which pairs cross paths next.

After a medical evacuation leaves 15 players remaining, Rawls realizes one will be left behind. East Texas teacher Bo Martin, 52, finally finds himself alone with everyone else on the other side.

Then “The Mountain Keeper” gives the group their first tough decision: leave Martin behind to pick up the pace or help him through. Despite concerns that Martin is slowing the group down, most decide to leave no man behind.

After completing the first obstacle, the group ultimately fails to reach the first checkpoint by the end of the day and spends the night on the trail in sleeping bags.

Who was medically evacuated from ‘The Summit’?

Media executive Tony Reyes, 36, became the first contestant to leave the season after collapsing on Day 1.

The ride became too much for the Austin marathoner, who insisted it would be fine if he waited another five minutes. Eventually, the medical staff removed him from the game, despite Reyes’ persistence.

“Tony didn’t give up. His body gave up on him,” Martin said. “That hits home, because it could be any of us.”

With his exit, so did the money he carried, bringing the total prize money down to $937,500. (Prize money only drops when someone quits or is medically evacuated, not rejected.)

Who was kicked out of ‘The Summit’?

On Day 2, the group arrived at the first of nine checkpoints, where they were treated to food and wine. Their shared celebration was short-lived once host Manu Bennett revealed they would be voting out a contestant and splitting their money equally.

Martin became the obvious choice until Mattie found the chopping block, rubbing others the wrong way. Mattie insisted she wanted to vote out MMA referee Jenye Stirlen, who she called boss. Unlike “Survivor”, there is no secret ballot, so players are forced to vote in front of each other.

In the end, everyone voted for Mattie except for South Carolina bank manager Amy Stephens, who remained loyal to her fellow mom. Mattie emptied her money out of her bag and said goodbye to Stephens with a broken heart as she rejected everyone else’s goodbyes.

“I didn’t want their fake hugs. Do you want to take the knife out of my back?” Mattie said in her confession. “The mountain will show people’s true colors. Stay true to who you are.”
