A New York man allegedly killed his ex-wife while their teenage daughter was in the car

A New York man faces murder charges after allegedly shooting his ex-wife and her boyfriend while the divorced couple’s teenage daughter sat in their car outside.

On Wednesday, August 28, Daniel Coppola, 50, entered the Saint James, Long Island home of ex Kelly Coppola and her partner Kenneth Pohlman before shooting and killing them, according to police.

A Suffolk County Police Department statement obtained by PEOPLE on Aug. 30 said, “Officers from the Fourth Precinct responded to 21 Brasswood Road after a 911 caller reported a 15-year-old female left the residence with the father them, without her mother knowing”.

Upon arrival at the property, police discovered two adults inside the home, both deceased from gunshot wounds. Authorities say both Kelly and Pohlman were shot by Daniel, according to the Suffolk County PD statement.

Several stations, including WABC, WNBC and CBS News, reported details of the incident.

According to WNBC, the incident happened at the victims’ Brasswood Road home around 11:30 p.m. local time after the suspect called his daughter and told her not to be in the house, according to police.

According to CBS News, police said Daniel put the 15-year-old in his car before killing Kelly, 50, and Kenneth, 53. He then allegedly drove his daughter back to the Head of the Harbour’s house.

Suffolk County Police Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer said, according to WNBC, “He contacted her, told her to get out of the house. Then he entered the house and committed these crimes.”

“She communicates with friends by text saying, ‘I don’t know what my dad did. I don’t know how my mother is,” Beyrer added of the teenager’s actions as her father drove her to his home, according to the media. .

According to Suffolk County police, Daniel has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

CBS News reported that the teenager called 911 at 11:45 p.m., telling officers her father was threatening to kill himself with a gun in his home. Authorities responded and arrested Daniel.

The 15-year-old’s friends then called 911 around 11:54 p.m. after being unable to reach the teen’s mother, according to the news outlet. Friends told police that the former couple’s daughter had left her mother’s house with her father without her mother’s knowledge.

Police then arrived at the Brasswood Road property and found the bodies of Kelly and Kenneth inside.

Kenneth’s brother Tom Pohlman said of the alleged shooting, according to WNBC, “Two bullets in the door to get into the house and then more bullets upstairs.”

Tom said of Daniel: “He was a jealous ex-husband. My brother made (Daniel’s) ex-wife happy and he wasn’t happy about it… When they first started dating a year ago, there were numerous, there were numerous threats.”

“She brought out the best in him, he brought out the best in her. They were very happy,” he added, according to the publication.

Kenneth’s other brother, John, told ABC7NY’S Eyewitness News, “I wasn’t known as John Pohlman growing up, I was ‘Kenny Pohlman’s brother,’ that’s how I was known. He was giving you the shirt off his back.”

According to CBS News, Kenneth was a father of three children. “Two of his children took their mother from them 17 years ago to cancer. Today, this maniac took their father from them. He has another child who lost his father as well,” Tom Pohlman said, according to publication.
