Del Mar council member resigns due to health issues – San Diego Union-Tribune

Citing health issues, Del Mar City Councilman Dwight Worden announced he will step down effective Sept. 24 after two years in office.

Worden said during the Aug. 26 board meeting that he was recently hospitalized for a transient ischemic attack, or small stroke.

“I have just returned from two weeks in Iceland, which helped me to believe that my health and well-being, as well as the interest of the city, would be better served by closing this chapter of my life,” he said.

Worden, a retired attorney since 2001, has been on the board for the past 10 years. Before that, he was Del Mar’s city attorney from 1977 to 1983. He added that the calendar will allow him to vote next month on a short-term rental ordinance that has been in the works for years.

Other accomplishments Worden mentioned during his time on the city council were the city’s sea level rise adaptation plan, played a role in founding the Clean Energy Alliance and served on the Community Advisory Committee and cut ribbon of the city’s new civic center as mayor. in 2018.

“Del Mar faces major challenges, some beyond our control that require us to negotiate successful regional solutions and others that require us to succeed in overcoming state mandates or further lose the local control that has shaped our identity as small town,” Worden. said.

The board may decide to appoint a replacement or hold a special election.

“We’re all shocked here,” Mayor Dave Druker said, adding that Worden has “extremely hard shoes to fill.”
