Authorities: More than 300 gallons of liquids, including diesel, spilled from truck in Santa Rosa

More than 300 gallons of various liquids, including diesel and gasoline, spilled from a truck onto several Santa Rosa roads Saturday, authorities said.

Santa Rosa police determined the liquids, initially held in containers, came from a truck carrying a metal horse trailer, said Sgt. Patricia Seffens said Sunday.

Tests by the Santa Rosa Fire Department’s hazardous materials team determined the spills also included oil and transmission fluid, the agency said in a news release.

The spills, the first of which was reported around 10:06 a.m., affected the 101 Freeway and four roads in northwest Santa Rosa and prompted several road and lane closures.

The calls required a response from the Santa Rosa Police, Santa Rosa Fire Department – including the hazmat unit – the California Highway Patrol and the City of Santa Rosa Transportation and Public Works.

The liquids were found on Steele Lane off of the southbound 101 Freeway and on Steele Lane near Cleveland Avenue and the Coddingtown Shopping Center.

Police and firefighters found five plastic containers — each holding about 275 gallons of liquid — strewn along North Dutton Avenue between West Ninth and Hewett streets. Three of the containers were damaged and about 300 gallons leaked onto the roads.

Parts of those roads were closed for about four hours — some of the longest spill-related closures.

More liquid was found on Coffey Lane and Wild Rose Drive.

Workers cleaned up spills from the closed lanes. All liquids were kept on roads and curbs and none entered storm drains.

All roads were reopened on Saturday.

The Santa Rosa Police Property Crimes Investigation Team and Environmental Crimes Unit are still investigating the spills.

Seffens said investigators have no reason to believe it was intentional.

The driver of the van has not been found, she added.
