Clay Higgins targets Haitian migrants in racist rant

After a Haitian advocacy group filed criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance, a member of Congress responded with a racist tirade that, frankly, is completely in keeping with the character of the modern GOP.

Earlier this week, the non-profit organization Haitian Bridge Alliance took advantage of an Ohio law that allows private citizens to file criminal charges against individuals, accusing Republican candidates of a series of crimes related to a smear campaign they promoted against Haitian migrants living in the city of Springfield. , Ohio. Trump and Vance falsely claimed the migrants were undocumented and terrorized the city in a variety of ways, including killing and eating local pets.

Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) responded to accusations from the Haiti Bridge Alliance on X, formerly Twitter, of undiluted racism.

“Laugh out loud. These Haitians are savages. Pet eating, voodoo, the worst country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters…but damn if they all don’t feel sophisticated now I’m indicting our president and vice president “, Higgins wrote. “All these thugs better get their minds and asses out of our country before January 20th,” he added.

Higgins has since deleted the post, apparently after it was faced with it on the floor of the Chamber of Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.).

Horsford even ruled that Higgins should be censored for the post because he used his official account to “publicly defame, insult and demean all Haitians and Haitian Americans in an overtly racist post.”

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) objected, noting that the tweet was deleted while threatening to go through “every comment from the other side.”

However, Horsford was far from the only member of Congress to challenge Higgins’ post. “One of the most racist and bigoted posts I’ve seen from a fellow member of Congress,” wrote Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) on X. “And from his official government account. Disgusting.”

House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) also called him “disgusting,” releasing a statement calling Higgins “an election-denying, conspiracy-mongering racial arsonist who is a disgrace to the House to the people”.

Higgins is no stranger to the perpetuation of anti-black racism. In 1992, Higgins, then an Army military policy officer, described former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke as “a homeboy” during Duke’s unsuccessful bid for the presidency.

“Regardless of David being a homeboy and all that, the boy is a Nazi and that’s a real problem,” Higgins said. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and added that he actually voted for Duke in his 1991 gubernatorial campaign.

Higgins is also a staunch Trump supporter and has spread several conspiracy theories popular among the MAGA faithful, including that the January 6 attack on the Capitol was orchestrated by the FBI.
