The Tweenies was a beloved nineties children’s show that captivated the nation’s children with its brightly colored puppet-like characters and quirky stories.

The CBBC show, which aired between 1999 and 2002, was so popular that 80% of British children aged two to six watched it.

The Tweenies took place in a kindergarten and followed the adventures of four characters, Milo, Jake, Bella and Fizz, along with their friends Max and Judy and their dog Doodles.

But after more than two decades in the open, character star Bob Golding, who played Milo and Max, has revealed a shocking secret that will no doubt leave fans stunned.

Bob told The Sun that he and fellow stars Sally Preisig, Emma Weaver, Colleen Daley and Sinead Rushe had never been in the iconic costumes.

Instead, they were just the voice actors.

Beneath the colorful, thick foam suits was a carefully selected cast of “skin actors.”

He told the publication: “The skin actors would go in first to rehearse with the director what the content of the scene would be.

“They were all five feet or under and very fit and obviously strong because the strain on your neck with those heads was huge.

“So they would come in and rehearse it without all the costumes and move like actors.”

He revealed they will be learning the songs and dances with musical directors Graham Pike and Liz Kitchen, before seeing the actors perform the scenes a week later.

The skin actors would then sing for the footage as they voiced.

The Tweenies took place in a kindergarten and followed the adventures of four characters, Milo, Jake, Bella and Fizz.

Bob also unveiled a unique system that created a more expressive and animated look for the suits.

Inside the heavy suits was a secret mechanism called the Performance Animatronic Control System.

It consisted of pedals and small wheels at the ends of the gloves that could be adjusted. To move the jaw, there was a sensor inside the thumb.

Bob revealed that the system took months for the actors to perfect.

Tweenies featured Bella, Milo, Fizz and Jake.

Bella, who was purple in color, was usually the confident and main character of the group and was usually involved in more mischievous storylines.

Milo, whose suit was red, spent his days burning energy and stimulating his friends.

Fizz, who was yellow in color, was a sweet but sometimes conceited person who loved to sing and dance ballet.

It was just the voice actors. Beneath the colorful, thick foam suits were a series of “skin actors”

And the young man of the group was Jake, who was blue in color and usually the most curious and relaxed.

The group, along with their dogs Doodles and Izzles, spent their days in their bright playroom, which had an outdoor play area.

They were looked after and guided by caretakers Max and Judy – whose full faces were never seen.

The show’s signature song featured the refrain, “Hey, hey, you ready to sing?”
