Current playoff spot

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – With tonight’s result, the Kansas City Current earned a spot in the 2024 NWSL Playoffs presented by Google Pixel. A 3-0 win over the Washington Spirit at CPKC Stadium on Friday night guarantees the incumbent a top-8 finish and a spot in the NWSL quarter-final round starting in November.

This will be the second postseason appearance in current franchise history. Kansas City has already had one of the most decorated and accomplished seasons since the club’s inception in 2020. Under head coach Vlatko Andonovski, the Current began the 2024 season with a 15-game unbeaten streak. Dating back to 2023, the club set a franchise record with an unbeaten streak that totaled 17 games before it was finally snapped on July 6.

The Current has one of the most potent offenses in the league with 46 goals in 21 regular season games. The club also boasts 18 different scorers this season, which is the most in NWSL history.

Golden Boot leader Temwa Chawinga led the way as the forward took the league by storm in her first season in the NWSL. The Malawian international is not only her country’s first to score in the league, but also set a club record in a single season with 16.

Chawinga also scored a goal in eight straight NWSL games, which marked the longest streak in NWSL history.

The team already has some hardware this year as they lifted the 2024 Women’s Cup from CPKC Stadium in August and will look to add a trophy to their case on October 25th in San Antonio, Texas at the NWSL x Liga MX Women’s Summer Cup Final against NJ /NY Gotham FC.

With a record of 12-3-6 (42 points) in 21 games, Current sits in third place in the NWSL standings. A top-four finish in the league standings would give the incumbent a first-round home playoff matchup at CPKC Stadium. The Current last made the postseason in 2022 when they appeared in the club’s first NWSL Championship, but ended up falling to the Portland Thorns 2-0 in Washington, DC at Audi Field.

The 2024 NWSL Playoffs will begin on Saturday, November 9 with the eight-team quarter-final round, followed by the semi-finals the following weekend. On Saturday, November 23, the 2024 NWSL Championship will be held in Kansas City, Missouri at CPKC Stadium, the world’s first purpose-built stadium for professional women’s soccer.
