“Every scene I get, I make it count” – Akah Nnani on being an actor

“Every scene I get, I make it count” – Akah Nnani on being an actor

In an interview with Pulse Nigeria, Nnani pointed out that his journey has not been smooth especially because he did not fit the mold of what an actor should look like. Despite these challenges, he always kept a clear goal in mind that guided him through every phase of his acting career.

“I started with the goal of being one of those actors who won’t be typecast. I also know that I didn’t fit into the narrative or the stereotype of what an actor should look like and be like at the time. I was broken, I was weak, but then I told myself that I had to find a way to show that I was going to give something different than these guys, and so I immediately set out to work on myself to make sure that I gave my best from every opportunity that was offered to me”, he said

Nnani is recognized for his wit and humor evident in a variety of films including Banana Island GhostNdani TV series, Conclusion and Amazon Original, She Must Listen. He added that his aim for every role he plays, be it big or small, is to leave a lasting impression on the audience even after they have finished watching his films.

“So if I’m going to be a houseboy in a movie, you give me two scenes, I’m going to steal the whole movie. I need to be remembered. I just knew I needed to be remembered. They make every scene count.” he said.

He stressed the importance of understanding and mastering his craft.

“I started studying actors. I watch movies to learn film and I watch actors to learn acting and so I decided I would be different. And so, from the small roles I took early in my career, everyone started to realize that I was an asset and someone decided to take a chance on me.” he said.

Despite not initially landing big opportunities, Nnani didn’t let that deter him. He explored other forms of entertainment in the industry.

“I realized that feature films were not the only things available, so I started doing web series, theater, short films. What theater did for me was sharpen my talent. Although I didn’t have all the big feature film opportunities, I was still working as an actor, but on different projects that didn’t get all the attention that feature films get.” he added

Nnani also stated that some producers are starting to see value in actors.

“Producers have come to realize and spot talent. It was hard and I said No a lot because some of these weren’t projects that put me in the best light, but even now sometimes I still have those doubts; am I making the right decision? Is it the right call? Being recognized encourages me. I think some producers are starting to see actors. And that’s a good thing.” he concluded.
