“Restoring full police services may take some time; we ask for your cooperation’: Chief DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mainul Hasan on Saturday urged citizens to abide by laws and regulations, acknowledging that full police services may be delayed during the ongoing crisis.

“Restoring full police services may take some time due to the current situation in the country. We ask for your trust and will strive to provide the best services with our professionalism,” he said at a press briefing held at the DMP media center. .

The head of the DMP also emphasized the importance of public cooperation with the traffic police. “Reducing traffic congestion to a manageable level is possible with everyone’s cooperation,” he noted.

Addressing the ongoing judicial actions, Commissioner Mainul mentioned that cases have already been submitted against those involved in the recent disturbances. “The legal process is ongoing and while it may take time to fully unfold, it is actively underway,” he said.

In response to questions about the arrest and remand of high-profile individuals, the DMP commissioner clarified, “Those remanded are suspects in cases related to the recent movement. Police are investigating whether they were involved in inciting the unrest through financial support, advice or public statements.”

Asked about officers with a reputation for unprofessional behaviour, Hasan stressed the importance of professionalism within the force. “We aim to build a disciplined police force where every officer, regardless of background, operates with the utmost professionalism,” he said.

On the topic of police corruption, the DMP Commissioner assured that there will be zero tolerance for corruption, irregularities and misconduct within the force.

Addressing the use of firearms during the quota reform protests, he pointed out that both licensed and illegal weapons were used during the unrest.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to Ansar and BGB members for their support to the police during this difficult time.
